2005 SB&F Prize Nominees!

2005 marks the 40th Anniversary of SB&F. To honor this Anniversary, Subaru and SB&F are looking back on decades of outstanding science books and honoring those authors and illustrators who have made lasting contributions to children's science literature. Each of the nominated authors and illustrators deserve praise for the significant role they have played in improving the science literacy of the many children who have enjoyed their books over the years.

SB&F will also honor an author of young adult and general audience science books with the SB&F Editor's Choice Prize. The winning author will be honored for their body of work, which reaches both young adult and general audiences, and encourages discussion and understanding of scientific ideas in the wider community.


The nominees are:

Children's science book authors -

Joanna Cole, author of over 90 nonfiction books for children, including the Magic School Bus series.

Jean Craighead George, author of children's science books for over 30 years, including the Newbery Medal winners, My Side of the Mountain and Julie of the Wolves.

Dorothy Hinshaw Patent, author of more than 100 books for children and young adults, many of which have been selected as Outstanding Science Trade Books for children by the National Science Teacher's Association.

Kathryn Lasky, Newbery Honor author of more than 50 books for children and young adults, her latest book is Humphrey, Albert, and the Flying Machine.

Patricia Lauber, author of more than 125 books for young readers, two of her books, Seeds: Pop Stick Glide and Journey to the Planets, were nonfiction nominees for The American Book Awards and her book, Volcano: The Eruption and Healing of Mount St. Helens was a Newbery Honor Book.

Laurence Pringle, award-winning author of over 100 books about nature, science, health, and environmental issues, including Sharks! Strange and Wonderful, and Dog of Discovery: A Newfoundland's Adventures with Lewis and Clark.

Seymour Simon, author of 200 highly acclaimed science books, over half of which have been named Outstanding Science Trade Books for Children by the National Science Teacher's Association

Hands-on science book authors -

Vicki Cobb, author of more than 80 highly entertaining nonfiction books for children, including the acclaimed Science Experiments You Can Eat.

Robert Gardner, award-winning author of more than 100 nonfiction books for children, including his latest series: Physics! Best Science projects.

Bernie Zubrowski, author of 16 books and 12 curriculum guides, he is perhaps best known for designing hands-on learning activities that engage young people in scientific explorations with very simple materials.

Science book illustrators -

Aliki, author and illustrator of more than a dozen Let's-Read-and-Find-Out Books, including Fossils Tell of Long Ago and Dinosaur Bones.

Bruce McMillan, holds a B.S. in biology from the University of Maine, his children's books have received numerous honors.

Jim Arnosky, winner of the Washington Post/Children's Book Guild Award for his overall contribution to nonfiction for children, he is the author/illustrator of the award-winning book, Drawing From Nature.
