The following sites
provide excellent information on drug education. Most of them have
numerous links to other sources of information on the Web.
The sites selected serve a wide range of audiences. They include
educational sites intended for use by schools, as well as sites
that are designed to provide assistance to individuals seeking information
about drugs, addiction, substances abuse, and other related topics.

American
Council on Drug Education
This site contains helpful
information for parents, teaching aids for educators and resource
material for adults concerned with substance abuse. Youngsters can
take The Learning Trip, which explores a human body and the effect
different drugs have on five major organs; the heart, brain, liver,
lungs, and central nervous system.
Center
for Education and Drug Abuse Research (CEDAR)
CEDAR serves to elucidate
the factors contributing to the variation in the liability to drug
abuse and determine the developmental pathways culminating in drug
abuse outcome, normal outcome, and psychiatric/behavioral disorder
outcome.
Drug
Education Links from the Indiana Prevention Resource Center
Designed to provide technical
support for classroom drug educators. Contains very helpful links
to drug education lesson plans, website addresses for drug education
materials, drug education curriculum guides, and more.
Drug-Free
Resource Net
From The Partnership
for a Drug-Free America, this attractive and well-organized site
provides accurate drug information, including description of drug
paraphernalia for parents. It alsorovides information on the signs
and symptoms of drug use and what to do if there is a problem.
DrugHelp
This is a non-profit
and referral network that provides information on specific drugs
and treatment options, as well as referrals to treatment programs,
self-help groups, family support groups, and crisis centers throughout
the United States. The web site includes research information and
a guide to help parents prevent and identify drug abuse in the family.
Higher
Education Center for Alcohol and Drug Education
The mission of the Higher
Education Center is to assist institutions of higher education in
developing and carrying out alcohol and other drug prevention programs
that foster students' academic and social development and promote
campus and community safety. Includes a specially-designed page
for college students, an interactive discussion forum for prevention
specialists and a section on prevention program evaluation.
Join
Together Online
As a project of the Boston
University School of Public Health funded by a grant from the Robert
Wood Johnson Foundation, Join Together Only is a leading (and probably
oldest) national online resource specializing in community-based
strategies to reduce substance abuse. With over 14,000 documents
online, 100 new ones added weekly, and several interactive tools.
MADD
(Mothers Against Drunk Driving)
MADD's web site contains
current and well-reference statistics on youth and alcohol and drunk
driving. Thier public policy page contains current federal legislatiave
iniatives and updates.
The
National Center on Addiction and Substance Abuse at Columbia University
(CASA)
This web site includes
information about treatment and prevention, the impact of drugs
on society, and the costs of substance abuse. Also included is a
section called "Personal Stories" and a discussion forum.
National
Clearinghouse for Alcohol and Drug Information
This site offers a great
wealth of information for teachers and educators. Includes a publication
catalog of free materials, several searchable databases, several
interactive sections dedicated to youth, and many full-text publications
available online.
National
Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA)
Contains a comprehensive
online bibliographic database containing over 100,000 records on
alcohol abuse and alcoholism, an excellent set of FAQs (Frequently
Asked Questions), and links to referral information and related
organizations/associations sites.
The
National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA)
NIDA is the primary Federal
agency for the conduct and support of research to increase knowledge
and develop strategies to deal with the health problems and issues
associated with drug abuse and addiction.
Office
of National Drug Control Policy
Includes links to prevention
and education programs, drug facts and statistics, links to science-based
information about addiction, and extensive information about enforcement
programs and drug trafficking. It includes special sections targeted
to children, teenagers, parents, and communities.
PREVLINE
This award winning web
resource, offers electronic access to searchable databases and substance
abuse prevention materials that pertain to alcohol, tobacco, and
drugs.
Safe
and Drug-free Schools Program
Federal program under
the auspices of US Dept of Education that works to identify effective
drug and violence prevention programs which demonstrate reductions
in youth drug use or violence, or that results in more discipline
and improved order in classroom environments. Provides information
on recent research and survey data related to youth drug abuse and
violence-related issues; listing of free publications, videotapes,
and audiotapes; and information on grant funding.
Web
of Addictions
This site is dedicated
to providing accurate information about alcohol and other drugaddictions.
It contains a collection of Fact Sheets on various drugs, links
to related resources, and contact information for a variety of groups
in the field.
